We have two superstars in Mrs. Snyder’s 4th grade class and just had to share! Ainye Taylor and Jaxon Jarvis were nominated by Mrs. Snyder, for their willingness to help keep their classrooms clean and for their kindness towards their fellow classmates and our school. They don’t wait for someone to ask for help—they jump right in and offer. That sounds like two very deserving Positive Office Referrals to me! So proud of both of them!

What a wonderful role model Laeliana Shifflett is at SJES! She was awarded a Positive Office Referral because she has been an exceptional student on the bus, even when there is chaos happening around her! While watching a bus video, Mrs. Duggan and Ms. Mahoney noticed Laeliana sitting quietly, following ALL the bus rules. She deserved to be recognized and celebrated! Well done, Laeliana! We are very proud of you!

Our 5th graders participated in the annual Schoolhouse Ridge field trip in Harpers Ferry. Schoolhouse Ridge was a witness to the Battle of Harpers Ferry, September 12-15, 1862. Confederate Commander Stonewall Jackson occupied the position on Schoolhouse Ridge, along with three divisions comprising nearly 15,000 men, during the Battle of Harpers Ferry. The National Park Service presents an immersive experience for our students, with information on the Calvary, hospital camps and the surrender of the Union troops at this site, right in our back yard. Our students had a fantastic time!

Miss Marian Neely was awarded a Positive Office Referral for her perseverance, hard work and responsibility as a student. Way to be a positive and inspiring role model, Marian—your hard work is paying off!! Super proud that you are a South Jefferson Roadrunner! 💜💛

Fourth graders Elaina Kline and Kanye Jones were nominated for Positive Office Referrals. Kanye was nominated by Ms. Brooks for his respectful and kind demeanor and for working hard every day. Elaina was nominated by Mrs. Sunday for helping to clean up after her class worked on salt dough maps. She pitched in right away and cleaned, without being asked. Both are awesome role models for all of SJES!

Ms. Potts’ 1st graders learned about the /ch/sound and made a "Ch"oo "Ch"oo train”around the room to reinforce the use of the sound. Movement, fun and learning all “engineered” into their day? Awesome!

Mrs. Sunday and Mrs. Snyder’s 4th grade classes worked on salt dough relief maps of West Virginia this week. An authentic “hands on” experience, in developing understanding of the topography of our beautiful state.

Congratulations to 5th graders, Zaedrian Sinclair and Robert Miller, for their Positive Office Referrals! Zaedrian was nominated by Mrs. Burwell for being such a respectful and caring citizen at SJES, helping out when needed and without being asked. Robert was nominated by Ms. Brooks for working hard in class and giving his all towards his schoolwork. Well done!!

Kindergarten creative play and problem solving help to create a solid foundation for future academic success. Our kindergartners are having a blast this year! Those smiles say it all!

Third Grade held their first writing workshop this week. They began by completing a writing interest inventory (how they feel about writing), then created positive self-talk selfies, set their personal writing goals and completed the first "quick write" (topic sentence and supporting details). 3rd grade is on their way to becoming amazing writers! We can't wait to see their progress!

Jonathan Darnell was recognized by Mrs. Applegate with a Positive Office Referral for cleaning up trash in the cafeteria for the third and fourth grade sections! Such responsible and respectful decisions, Jonathan! Thank you! 💜💛

Joseph Reimer was awarded a Positive Office Referral by Mrs. Sunday for assisting a friend in class and showing kindness. Exactly the type of behavior we celebrate at South Jefferson! Awesome job, Joseph! 💛💜

Mrs. Vogel’s 2nd grade students took on the challenge of building the tallest castle, with just paper and tape, after their study of fairy tales. 🏰

Patriot Day 9/11 🇺🇸
Ms. Horne’s Kindergarten class

Woohoo! 🙌 Way to go,
Roadrunners! We have already logged 11,274 minutes read and raised $8770. Keep it up! Reading continues through Monday, 9/22. If you haven’t created an account yet, it’s still not too late to do so.

Join us for the first PTO Meeting on Tuesday, September 9th at 7:00 pm!

Our Roadrunners kicked off September with a promise of “I Pledge To Be Present” for
Attendance Awareness Month. Every student was given the opportunity to sign the banner and do their best to be present at school each day. Super proud of them! (Thank you to Mrs. Fletcher—Community In Schools—and Mrs. Siddoway—our counselor—for helping us to kick off the year with intention!) Can’t wait to hang this banner in our cafeteria! 😊
