Exploring Our Watershed: A Day of Discovery
Our students spent an exciting morning exploring Town Run and discovering the importance of keeping our water clean! Through hands-on activities and outdoor exploration, students learned how water connects our communities, supports wildlife, and sustains healthy ecosystems.
Exploring the Stream
Students searched Town Run for aquatic macroinvertebrates, small organisms that can provide clues about stream health. They also tested water quality and learned how scientists monitor waterways to identify potential pollution and protect aquatic life.
Discovering Nature
During a hike, students observed different habitats and explored how plants and animals depend on their environment. They gained a greater appreciation for the connections between healthy habitats and a healthy watershed.
Building Natural Water Filters
Students put their creativity and problem-solving skills to work by designing water filters using natural materials such as sand and gravel. They observed how filtration removes some visible particles and learned that clear-looking water is not always safe to drink. This activity highlighted the importance of preventing pollution and protecting our water sources.
Protecting Our Watershed
Our field trip was a wonderful opportunity to bring science to life! Through exploration, investigation, and teamwork, students discovered how they can help protect our environment.
Clean water starts with us! Small actions, such as reducing litter, disposing of waste properly, and keeping streams clean, can make a big difference in protecting our watershed for the future.
What do Candy Land, occupational therapy, and chocolate milk have in common? They were all part of our exciting unit wrap-up!
Students stepped into the shoes of a child recovering from polio in an isolation ward. Through a reading passage, they discovered how a teacher recovering from polio created Candy Land to entertain children during their recovery. We brought that story to life by:
🎲 Playing Candy Land and Operation to pass the time.
🦶 Practicing occupational therapy by moving marbles with our toes, just like Peg Lehrer in our unit story.
🎨 Designing parade floats inspired by the settings of our personal narratives.
🥛🍪 Ending with chocolate milk and Oreos for a sweet finish!
We even connected our treat to our story about a pet who makes a huge turnaround after drinking a chocolate milkshake!
It was a fun, hands-on morning filled with creativity, meaningful connections, and a new appreciation for how games and imagination can brighten difficult days. What a sweet way to wrap up our learning!

Today, students enjoyed Celebrate West Virginia, an educational musical program presented by Mick Souter. The interactive performance combined music, storytelling, and state history, giving students a fun and engaging way to learn more about the people and traditions that make West Virginia special. Mick Souter's touring Musical Theater has made over 3,000 appearance's in schools, festivals, state parks and theaters over the last 20 years.
Tim Artlip from the USDA Farm came for the 16th year to give his "apple talk" to the Kindergarten students. He began giving his talk to the students the year his own daughter, Naomi was in Kindergarten here. Every year since (almost) he has appeared every September to show his slide show about how apples grow, brought paw paws for the students to smell and see, and even brought in little trees in jars that they were growing! Thank you Mr. Artlip for your "appealing" talk all these years!!
The staff at C.W. Shipley Elementary is excited to welcome all of our students back for another wonderful school year!
Our hallways are ready, our classrooms are prepared, and our staff is looking forward to a year filled with learning, laughter, friendship, and growth. We are so happy to see our Rangers back and ready to begin a new adventure together.

This scholarship fund has given out 127 scholarships to graduating seniors in the amount of $47,750.
The students who donated money got to have their name put into a basket. For every dollar they sent in, they got their name put in that many times. Teachers who were getting pied in the face got to draw a students name, and they were able to pie that teacher! It was a great time for all and staff and students showed their school spirit and cheered everyone on!!

CANVAS UPDATE: 5/8/2026
Canvas was down the evening of Thursday, May 7, 2026, due to a reported data breach. Early reports indicate this impacts over 8,000+ public schools, colleges, and institutions across the country. JCS is an impacted organization.
Indications so far are that the information involved includes student/staff names, JCS/WVDE-issued student/staff ID numbers (not social security numbers), email addresses, and messages between users on the platform.
JCS has no evidence of a compromise to internal district systems. Our Technology Team is actively assessing impact and implementing precautionary safeguards.

Jefferson County Schools will operate on a modified Non-Traditional Instruction Day (NTID) on Monday, March 16. All evening activities are canceled.
This decision was made after monitoring the weather throughout the weekend and consulting with the National Weather Service Charleston, WV, office this evening. Forecasted severe storms, including high winds up to 80 mph, heavy rain, and the potential for tornadoes, are creating too much uncertainty to plan for either an early or standard dismissal tomorrow afternoon. Keeping students at home helps us avoid putting them or our staff in harm's way.
What This Means for Your Student:
- Students will not report to school tomorrow and will complete their learning from home.
- K–5 students will find assignments and information posted in Rooms, as we did not send devices home for Canvas access.
- 6–12 students should follow the normal NTID process and connect with their teachers through their usual platforms.
- Teachers and staff will be available to support students from 9:15 am – 12:00 pm.
All LSIC meetings scheduled for tomorrow are cancelled and will be rescheduled. Math Field Day has been postponed to Wednesday, March 18.

We are excited to share that we have several school-wide events coming up at C.W. Shipley! These activities help bring our school community together and give students opportunities to participate in fun and meaningful experiences.
In the coming weeks, students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of events including spirit days, special activities, and school-wide celebrations. These events help build school spirit, encourage student involvement, and create lasting memories for our students.
